Dancing House, Modern architectural landmark in Nove Mesto, Prague, Czech Republic.
The Dancing House is a modern architectural landmark in the Nove Mesto district of Prague, Czech Republic, consisting of two connected towers with curved glass walls and misaligned windows. The structure appears as a rotating pair through its sweeping forms and inward-leaning silhouette.
The building was completed in 1996 and stands on a site where an apartment house was destroyed during an American bombing raid in 1945. The design, by architects Vlado Milunić and Frank Gehry, marked a turning point in Prague's urban planning after the fall of communism.
The building carries the nickname Ginger and Fred, a reference to the dance pair Ginger Rogers and Fred Astaire, whose movements the two towers seem to imitate. Today, besides offices, it houses a restaurant on the top floor that visitors seek out for its views over the city.
The building sits on a corner along the Vltava riverbank and is easy to reach on foot from the city center. Those wishing to visit the roof should note that there is a restaurant located there, accessible by reservation.
The facade consists of 99 concrete panels, each with its own shape, so that no element resembles another. At the top sits a metal mesh dome nicknamed Medusa.
