Cabeça, Mountain village in Serra da Estrela, Portugal
Cabeça is a village in Serra da Estrela with traditional shale houses arranged along narrow streets that climb the northern slope of the mountain. The buildings create a compact settlement where stone construction and winding paths form the characteristic layout of the place.
The settlement developed on a hilltop called cabeço, which shaped its name and offered advantages for viewing the surrounding valleys. This elevated position made it a natural choice for habitation in the mountain landscape.
During December, residents decorate their houses with handmade ornaments created from natural materials, following sustainable practices and local traditions.
The village is accessible year-round, though most visits take place during hiking season in warmer months. The narrow streets require comfortable walking shoes and extra care in wet weather.
In 2011, Cabeça became the first Portuguese village to implement LED technology for all public lighting, demonstrating environmental commitment.
