Estrela is the highest summit of continental Portugal, rising to nearly 2,000 meters and featuring dramatic granite outcrops across its slopes. From the top, views extend across multiple mountain ranges in all directions.

The granite ridge served as Portugal's southern boundary in ancient times, with archaeological finds indicating human presence dating back thousands of years. This strategic location shaped early settlement patterns in the region.

The summit area reflects the region's pastoral heritage, particularly through the Serra da Estrela cheese tradition and the mountain dog breed that developed here alongside shepherding practices. Visitors can see how this elevated landscape shaped local ways of living and working with animals.

A paved road runs to the summit, allowing year-round vehicle access, though winter snow may require chains and temporary closure. Clear weather offers the best views, but conditions change quickly at this elevation.

Three of Portugal's major rivers originate near the summit: the Mondego, Zêzere, and Alva, which together supply water to much of the surrounding region. This makes the location crucial for both local farming and downstream communities.
