Ponte da Ribeira da Carpinteira, Pedestrian bridge in Covilhã, Portugal
Ponte da Ribeira da Carpinteira is a modern pedestrian bridge crossing the valley of the Carpinteira River in Covilhã. The white steel structure with a wooden walking surface connects two residential areas on opposite sides of the valley.
The bridge was built from 2003 to 2009 to meet growing mobility needs in the expanding residential areas. It emerged as a modern solution to connect communities in a city with a long industrial past in textile manufacturing.
The bridge design by architect Carrilho da Graça received recognition at the 2012 Ibero-American Architecture and Urban Planning Biennial for its engineering achievement.
The bridge serves pedestrians and cyclists with a direct crossing over the deep valley below. Early morning or late afternoon visits offer the best light for appreciating the view and the structure from different angles.
The curved path of the bridge reveals different views of the Serra da Estrela mountains and the Cova da Beira valley as you walk across. Each section offers a new perspective on the distant peaks and the terrain below.
