Lac de Villefranche-de-Panat

Lac de Villefranche-de-Panat is an artificial reservoir covering around 192 hectares at an elevation near 727 meters in the Massif Central. Granite plateaus surround the water, creating a geological landscape characteristic of this highland region.

The dam was built between 1948 and 1951, creating this artificial body of water that transformed local water management practices. This construction project reshaped the valley and established new patterns of land and water use.

The lake serves as a gathering place where locals and visitors enjoy swimming, picnicking, and walking along the water's edge during warmer months. Sandy beaches and shaded walking paths create spaces where people spend leisure time with family and friends.

Two supervised swimming areas at Granouillac and Le Mayrac beaches allow safe water access during summer. Free parking is available nearby, and visitors should bring water and sun protection when visiting in warm weather.

An underground tunnel system links this reservoir to Lac de Saint-Amans through a passage about 4690 meters long. This hidden water transfer system is often overlooked by visitors but plays an important role in regional water management.
