Zona de Acampada La Toba, Mountain campground in Santiago-Pontones, Spain
Zona de Acampada La Toba is a mountain campsite positioned at about 969 meters elevation surrounded by pine forests and overlooking the Anchuricas reservoir within Sierra de Cazorla Natural Park. The grounds contain approximately 100 free camping spaces equipped with barbecue areas, picnic tables, benches, waste receptacles, and a water point for basic use.
The area once held the village of Las Casicas, now submerged beneath the Anchuricas reservoir after its construction reshaped the landscape. A submerged church remains as a reminder of the settlement that existed before the dam was built.
Shepherds working in the surrounding hills maintain grazing practices that have changed little over centuries and shape how the landscape is used. Their presence and animals remain visible across the terrain, creating a working pastoral environment that visitors encounter.
The campsite operates on a first-come basis without designated plots, so arriving early during weekends and peak season helps secure a spot. The water supply at the site is not drinkable, so visitors should bring drinking water or refill in nearby towns.
In autumn, walnut trees surrounding the campground shift into warm fall colors while griffon vultures wheel overhead in the mountain sky. This season offers some of the most striking lighting and wildlife activity across the elevated terrain.
