Rota dos Passadiços do Mondego
The Rota dos Passadiços do Mondego is a hiking trail stretching about 12 kilometers from the Caldeirão Dam to the village of Videmonte, following the banks of the Mondego River through a narrow valley. The path crosses oak and chestnut forests, three suspension bridges, a medieval stone bridge, and passes old mills and industrial ruins.
The trail was constructed with platforms and walkways to provide access to the narrow Mondego gorge as a modern project. The bridges and ruins along the route, such as the Pateiro hydroelectric station opened in 1899, show how the region developed through water-powered industry.
The trail's name refers to the walkways and platforms constructed along the Mondego River to access the narrow valley. The village of Videmonte at the trail's end keeps traditions alive through communal ovens where locals still bake bread together.
Book tickets in advance online as daily visitor numbers are limited to prevent overcrowding. Bring sturdy hiking shoes, plenty of water, sun protection, and weather-appropriate clothing, and plan your visit for spring or autumn when conditions are mild.
A two-kilometer water diversion tunnel is a striking example of old engineering that visitors can observe along the trail. This hidden infrastructure reveals how the region cleverly harnessed water to generate electricity.
