Castle of Linhares, Medieval castle on Serra da Estrela mountain range, Portugal.
Castle of Linhares is a medieval fortress located on Serra da Estrela mountain range at approximately 820 meters elevation. The structure consists of two stone enclosures with four gates of varying architectural styles, a rectangular keep, and a tower that housed a clock mechanism.
The Knights Templar constructed the main keep in the 12th century as a strategic defense point. King Denis of Portugal later modified and reinforced the structure in the 14th century to strengthen its protective capabilities.
The fortress served as a key military stronghold that protected mountain passages and trade routes for centuries. Today visitors can observe the stonework and layout that reveal how it was used to defend the region.
The fortress sits on a mountainside with pathways for exploring the walls and gates. The terrain is uneven, so wearing comfortable shoes and allowing adequate time helps visitors explore all sections thoroughly.
A clock was installed in the tower during the 17th century and later connected to an external bell in 1817. This system served as an unusual way to inform people living below the fortress of the time.
