Castle of Folgosinho

The Castle of Folgosinho is a medieval fortress on a ridge in Portugal with rounded walls and watchtowers. The structure features a central courtyard surrounded by thick stone walls that form its main components.

King Sancho I commissioned the fortress in 1183, possibly building upon remains of an earlier Lusitanian fortification. Its construction coincided with Portugal's expansion and the need to protect newly acquired territories.

The castle holds official status as public cultural heritage and represents Portugal's legacy as a fortified mountain stronghold. Its position on a ridge demonstrates how medieval rulers used elevation for surveillance and defense.

From Folgosinho village, marked hiking trails lead to the fortress through steep terrain. Wear sturdy footwear since the paths are rough and the elevation gain is significant.

The fortress walls combine two distinct construction methods: lower stone foundations supporting upper layered stonework with integrated defensive elements. This technique reveals how medieval builders adapted and reinforced their structures over time.
