Foodhallen, Food court in Amsterdam West, Netherlands
Foodhallen is a food market in Amsterdam West housing over 20 cooking stalls that serve dishes from numerous countries under one roof. The layout features a long central counter and scattered tables that let diners sit anywhere while eating from any vendor.
The building began as a tram maintenance facility in 1902 and operated in that role for nearly a century before being repurposed. It opened as Foodhallen in 2014 following its renovation into a market hall.
The space reflects Amsterdam's embrace of international food traditions, with vendors preparing dishes from around the world in view of diners. Customers shape their own meals by mixing cuisines from different stalls, a practice that defines how people use the hall today.
The market opens at noon with hours extending past midnight on most nights, stretching to 1:00 AM on weekends. Budget extra time to browse the different vendors and plan your meal, as each stall operates independently.
Multiple bar stations scattered throughout the space let you grab a drink from anywhere, then settle at any table with food from any vendor. This setup creates an unusually flexible dining experience where the usual separation between bar and meal melts away.
