Middelkerke

Middelkerke is a coastal municipality in West Flanders stretching along the North Sea between Ostend and Nieuwpoort. The area covers several villages and agricultural lands spread across approximately 75 square kilometers.

The settlement was first documented as Middelkerca in 1218 and grew from farming roots into a coastal community. It received its status as a modern municipality in 1977 during an administrative reorganization.

The cycling competition Noordzeecross in February draws international athletes and spectators to the Superprestige cyclo-cross race series held here. This event shapes the local sports calendar and brings many visitors to the region each year.

Visitors can reach the administrative center at Spermaliestraat 18, where multilingual staff provides services during regular business hours. The best time to explore the area is during daylight hours when services and facilities are fully available.

In 1902, this area pioneered a groundbreaking public health innovation by becoming the first place worldwide to introduce continuous chlorination for drinking water treatment. This advancement marked a turning point in water safety and disease prevention.
