La place forte de Neuf-Brisach
Neuf-Brisach is a fortified town in Alsace surrounded by geometric ramparts and canals. The entire site follows a strict star-shaped layout with eight bastions at the corners and regularly planned streets.
The town was founded in 1698 after France took control of the region from the Holy Roman Empire. Since then it has remained largely unchanged as an example of military urban planning.
The site is easily accessible on foot and visitors can walk along the ramparts to admire the overall design. Most areas are freely accessible, though some buildings may have limited opening hours.
The site has barely been rebuilt since its founding and preserves the original military design nearly intact. This makes it one of the few places in Europe where you can experience a fully planned fortress town from this period.
