Beaurepaire, Statue in Angers, France
Beaurepaire is a bronze statue placed on a bridge in Angers, France, created by sculptor Maximilien Bourgeois. It depicts a military figure standing upright, with details carefully worked into the metal surface.
The statue was commissioned in 1842 by Théodore de Quatrebarbes, cast in 1846, and offered to the city in 1847. It was originally planned for a square near the castle but was eventually placed on a bridge.
The statue honors General Beaurepaire, a soldier who fought and died for the Republic during the French Revolution. His name is especially remembered in Angers, where he is seen as a local hero.
The statue stands on a bridge and is easy to see from several angles as you walk by. Visiting during the day is a good idea so the texture of the bronze surface is clearly visible.
The base of the statue carries inscriptions and small sculptures representing other historical figures from the region. These added figures make the pedestal itself worth looking at closely.
