Dom Pierre Pérignon was born in 1639 and spent nearly 50 years as a monk at the Abbey of Hautvillers, where he worked to improve the wines of the region. His methods earned praise from King Louis XIV, and he became known as the spiritual father of Champagne.
The statue shows Dom Pérignon smiling, holding a glass of champagne and standing on an oversized bottle. This modern take gives the monk a friendly face and makes his story easy to connect with for first-time visitors.
The statue stands in the open Parc Pierre-Cheval in Hautvillers and can be visited at any time without restriction. It works well as a starting point for a walk through the village and along the surrounding vineyards.
Before this statue was unveiled, only two other monuments to Dom Pérignon existed in the entire region, one of them in Épernay. The village where he spent almost his whole life was among the last places to receive its own monument in his honor.
