Falla Sueca - Literat Azorín, Work of art in l'Eixample, València, Spain

Falla Sueca - Literato Azorín is a temporary work of art erected each year in the l'Eixample neighborhood of València, Spain, as part of the Fallas festival. It is built from papier-mâché, wood, and foam, and features large painted figures arranged into a single scene that can be several meters tall.

The Fallas tradition in Valencia began more than a century ago as a simple popular custom linked to fire and the arrival of spring. Over the decades, the festival grew into a major city event, and the sculptures became larger and more carefully crafted each year.

The Fallas festival takes place every March on the streets of Valencia, and each sculpture tells a story about daily life, current events, or local customs, often with a humorous tone. Walking around the Falla Sueca - Literato Azorín, you can read the scene like a comic strip, where figures comment on things that locals recognize immediately.

The sculpture is installed on the street during the Fallas days in March and can be viewed for free from all sides without any ticket. Going during daylight hours makes it easier to see all the details of the figures, though the piece is also lit up in the evening.

Although every Falla is burned at the end of the festival, a jury selects certain figures each year to be saved and permanently displayed in the Fallas Museum in València. These rescued pieces show that the craftsmanship behind these temporary works is taken seriously as a form of art.
