Systrarna, Work of art in Hägersten-Älvsjö, Stockholm, Sweden
Systrarna is a bronze sculpture placed outdoors in the Västertorp area of Hägersten-Älvsjö, near Vasaloppsvägen. Two figures stand close together, and the warm tone of the metal gives the piece a grounded, everyday presence among the surrounding grass and trees.
The piece was made in 1955 by Stig Blomberg, an artist who often returned to children and young people as subjects. He also served on the committee that bought works for the Västertorp sculpture collection, so his own bronze entered the same public collection he helped assemble.
Local residents treat the work as a small landmark where children play nearby and adults sometimes stop to look or chat. The two figures standing together give people a visible point of connection, a spot where the daily rhythm of the neighborhood slows down for a moment without any special occasion.
The sculpture sits in a green, open spot near shops and small cafés, so it is easy to reach on foot during a regular errand. You can pause beside it, move around it freely, and combine the stop with a short rest or a walk through the neighborhood.
Often described as a symbol of togetherness, the piece actually shows no identifying details or props beyond the simple stance of two figures. The bronze surface will keep gaining a soft patina over time, so the work looks slightly different each year while staying in the same place.
