La Vierge du Lac, Statue in Ouchy, Lausanne, Switzerland
La Vierge du Lac is a marble statue standing on the quays of Ouchy in Lausanne. It depicts a female figure looking out over Lake Geneva, surrounded by flower beds and palm trees.
The statue was created in public on the quays of Lausanne between 1987 and 1989. It was officially inaugurated in 1991 by the Pirates of Ouchy association.
The name of the statue refers to its role as a guardian of the lake, and local sailors sometimes mention it in stories. Visitors often stop to take photos with the flower beds and the lake in the background.
The statue is easy to reach on foot from the Ouchy metro station and the nearby boat docks. It stands in the open, so you can visit at any time and combine it with a walk along the waterfront.
The statue is made of white marble and stands almost 10 feet (3 meters) tall. It was sculpted by Vincent Kesselring, and its installation on the quay where it was made makes it a piece of local craft history.
