Chica con Pelota, Bronze sculpture in Lausanne, Switzerland
Chica con Pelota is a bronze sculpture of a reclining female figure in Lausanne, Switzerland. The rounded form lies on her back with knees drawn up and left arm raised, a cloth draped across her hips, and the smooth dark surface dotted with pale flecks.
Created by Fernando Botero in 1989, this sculpture is a copy numbered 2/3 and was cast by Fonderia Artistica Mariani. It is now part of the collections of the Olympic Museum in Lausanne.
The figure holds a ball in her right hand, a detail that connects the work to the world of sport. Visitors often stop to look at the contrast between the heavy material and the soft curves of the body.
The sculpture sits on a flat base in short grass, so you can walk around it easily. It is in an outdoor area with shrubs behind, and the surface reflects light, so it looks different depending on the time of day.
The bronze weighs 685 kg, yet the figure appears light and floating. Small pale flecks on the dark surface catch the eye and add texture to the otherwise smooth finish.
