Corto Maltese, Statue in Grandvaux, Switzerland
The Corto Maltese statue is a bronze figure standing in the village of Grandvaux, Switzerland. It shows the comic book sailor with his hands behind his back, looking out over Lake Geneva.
The bronze was cast before 1996, while Hugo Pratt was still alive, and it was placed in the village in 2007 during a redevelopment of the area. A second version of the statue was later unveiled in Angoulême, France, in 2008.
Corto Maltese is a famous character from the comics of Hugo Pratt, who spent his last years in Grandvaux. The statue is a tribute to both the character and its creator, and the wine cellar below the square also carries the sailor's name.
The statue stands near the center of Grandvaux, a short walk from the village square. You can see it at any time, and the spot is easy to reach on foot from the surrounding streets.
The statue faces Lake Geneva from the heights of the Lavaux vineyards, a view that matches the sailor's love of the sea. The sculpture was made by Livio and Luc Benedetti, a father and son who were friends of Hugo Pratt.
