Drapeaux d'Ouchy, Public art display in Ouchy, Lausanne, Switzerland
Drapeaux d'Ouchy is a public art display in Ouchy, Lausanne, Switzerland, consisting of a row of tall metal flagpoles each holding a long vertical banner. The banners are brightly colored, mostly yellow and orange, with painted figures and abstract shapes, and they hang flat from horizontal arms near the top of each pole.
The tradition of displaying painted flags on the Place de la Navigation began in 1995 and has continued every summer since. Over the years, different themes have been chosen, such as the International Year of Forests in 2011, when children painted leaves, squirrels, flowers, and fruits on a yellow background.
Each year, local schoolchildren paint the flags on a chosen theme, and the results are displayed for the public to enjoy. The project gives young artists a chance to see their work in a public space, and the flags add a splash of color to the area.
The display is located on the esplanade of Ouchy, near the Place de la Navigation, just opposite the exit of the M2 metro station and next to the Château d'Ouchy. It is an outdoor installation, so you can walk among the flags at any time, but they are typically on view from spring until the following winter.
The flags are made of light cotton fabric, each measuring 90 cm by 535 cm, allowing them to flutter in the wind. They are painted using various techniques, including brushes, rollers, and even fingers, giving each flag a unique texture.
