Musée Napoléon, History museum in Brienne-le-Château, France
The Musée Napoléon is a history museum in Brienne-le-Château, housed in the building of the former Royal Military School where Napoleon Bonaparte studied from 1779 to 1784. The exhibits are organized around four themes: Napoleon's public image, his strategy, his reforms, and his personal life, with around 200 paintings, drawings, garments, and documents.
The museum was founded in 1969 by local history enthusiasts and expanded in 1995 following a donation. Between 2016 and 2018 it was renovated and modernized, making the collections easier to access and follow.
Inside the museum, visitors can read quotes in which Bonaparte calls Brienne his true homeland, saying the town gave him his first impressions as a person. The rooms display uniforms, portraits, letters, and personal objects that together give a concrete sense of everyday life in his time.
The museum is on the Rue de l'Ecole Militaire in Brienne-le-Château and can be visited on your own or with a guided tour. Opening hours change depending on the season, so checking the website in advance is a good idea.
Part of the museum building was once a chapel and is now used for workshops, talks, and temporary exhibitions. On some days you might attend a talk on a topic quite different from Napoleon, such as the history of the washboats of the Aube region.
