Mirador de La Antigua
Mirador de La Antigua, also known as Meandro El Melero, is a viewpoint in Cáceres province in the Las Hurdes region that offers wide views of the natural landscape. The site has two levels built into the terrain, and from both you can see the large bend of the Alagón River and the surrounding hills clearly.
This area was settled since ancient times by small communities that used the landscape for farming and living in close contact with nature. The Las Hurdes region adapted over centuries to the conditions of its mountainous surroundings while maintaining its traditional way of life.
The site is called Mirador de La Antigua and is known locally as Meandro El Melero after the distinctive river bend visible from this spot. The Las Hurdes region maintains simple living traditions that have shaped the way people interact with this mountainous landscape for generations.
The viewpoint can be reached by car or along marked walking trails that pass through a forest of tall pine trees and start from the village of Ríomalo de Abajo. A short marked path is easy to walk, and sturdy shoes are recommended if you plan to explore longer trails like La Vereda de los Pescadores that lead lower into the landscape.
The Alagón River has shaped this bend over many years, creating a natural U-shape that is especially clear from the viewpoint. The best time to visit is after heavy rains or when the nearby reservoir has plenty of water, as this greatly enhances the beauty of the scene.
