Mirador Puig Rom is a scenic viewpoint on a hill above the coastal town of Roses, in the north of Catalonia, Spain. From the top, the view takes in the Gulf of Roses, the sandy shores below, and on clear days stretches along a wide arc of coastline.
The hill of Puig Rom was home to a fortified Visigothic settlement around the 7th century, making it one of the older inhabited sites in this part of the coast. After that period ended, the hilltop gradually lost its defensive role and was eventually used mainly as a natural lookout over the sea.
Puig Rom has a reputation as a romantic spot, and it is actually listed as a proposal location. Couples come here to mark important moments, drawn by the open view over the bay and the stillness of the hill.
The viewpoint is freely accessible with no booking needed, though reaching it on foot involves some uphill walking, so comfortable shoes are a good idea. There are no facilities on the hill itself, so it is worth bringing water, especially in warmer months.
The hill is sometimes still referred to by its older name, Puig Rom de Santa Rosa, after a small chapel that once stood nearby. Visitors who arrive in the early morning when the Tramuntana wind is blowing often find the experience quite different from a calm afternoon visit.
