Lover's Leap is a rocky outcrop on the Appalachian Trail in Hot Springs, North Carolina, that looks out over the French Broad River and the forested ridges around it. It sits at the top of a short trail that begins at the edge of town and climbs along the mountain ridge.
The name comes from a Cherokee legend in which a young woman named Mist-On-The-Mountain leapt from the cliffs after her lover Magwa was killed by a rival. That story, set long before European settlement, gave the place its romantic name and shaped how generations of visitors have seen it.
The spot is linked to a Cherokee legend about a tragic love story that ended on these cliffs. A small plaque near the viewpoint shares the story, and the place has since become a favorite for couples who come to mark a special moment.
The trail to reach the viewpoint starts from the center of Hot Springs and follows the Appalachian Trail, marked by white blazes, up the mountain ridge. The rocks near the edge are uneven and loose in places, so sturdy shoes and careful footing are a good idea.
Lover's Leap is actually the second of three rocky outcrops along the ridge, not the final or highest point of the trail. Walkers who continue past it reach a third promontory with a slightly different angle over the river below.
