Rosomacki Lonci, Canyon in Serbien
Rosomacki Lonci is a canyon along the Rosomača River near the village of Slavinja, characterized by layered red rocks carved by flowing water into cascades and deep whirlpools. The narrow valley shows where the river drops suddenly, creating waterfalls and smooth rock formations throughout the gorge.
The canyon formed over millions of years as water cut through the rock of the Stara Planina mountains, with the river gradually carving the deep valley through persistent erosion. The layered red rocks exposed by this process reveal the ancient geological history of the region.
The name "Lonci" refers to the pot-like hollows carved by water into the rocks, which are visible throughout the valley. These formations reflect how the flowing river shapes the landscape and creates distinctive features that define the character of this place.
The walk from Slavinja village to the canyon takes about 15 to 30 minutes following the river path, and staying close to the water helps you stay on track. Wear comfortable shoes for rocky terrain and bring water with you, as daytime visits make it easier to navigate and enjoy the sights.
A small cave near the canyon entrance holds fresh drinking water that visitors can safely use during their exploration. An old watermill standing on a meadow before the canyon serves as a natural gathering point and camping spot, offering a picturesque place to rest before venturing into the gorge.
