Quila Mubarak
Quila Mubarak is a large stone and brick fort located in the center of Patiala, consisting of multiple connected sections and courtyards. Inside, the main palace called Quila Androon features decorated rooms including Sheesh Mahal and Rang Mahal, which display paintings, frescoes, and mirror work done by artists from different regions.
The fort was built around 1763 by Maharaja Amar Singh, grandson of Baba Ala Singh who founded the Patiala dynasty. Multiple rulers made changes and additions over the centuries, resulting in a structure that combines architectural styles from different periods and regions.
The name Quila Mubarak means 'blessed fort' and reflects how the rulers of Patiala viewed this place as central to their power. Visitors today can see in rooms like Sheesh Mahal and Rang Mahal the artistic traditions that blend styles from Mughal, Rajasthani, and Pahari regions.
The best times to visit are early mornings or late afternoons, as summers are quite hot in the area. Wear comfortable clothing, drink water regularly, and check for any access restrictions or special hours before your visit to ensure a smooth experience.
Inside the Darbar Hall functions as a museum displaying historical weapons, including a sword that belonged to Guru Gobind Singh, the tenth Sikh Guru, and another sword of Nadir Shah, a Persian ruler. These artifacts give visitors a direct connection to the military and diplomatic history of the region.
