수원화성, Castle gate in Suwon, South Korea

Hwaseomun is the western gate of the Hwaseong Fortress in Suwon, South Korea, and one of its four main gates. It consists of a stone base with an arched passageway topped by a wooden pavilion structure.

Construction began in 1795 and was completed the following year as part of King Jeongjo's project to build Hwaseong Fortress during the Joseon dynasty. After damage from later conflicts, the site was restored using records from the original construction period.

Hwaseong Fortress's western gate marks the start of the old route toward the coast, a path merchants and travelers once passed through regularly. Visitors today can walk directly beneath the original stone arch and observe the layered stonework up close.

The gate is accessible at any time from the outside and sits along the marked walking path that follows the full circuit of Hwaseong Fortress. Arriving early in the day tends to make the area easier to explore on foot.

Among the four main gates of Hwaseong Fortress, this western one tends to draw fewer visitors than the more central southern gate, making it easier to observe the stonework in detail. From the nearby wall walk, you can see how the gate connects directly to two watchtowers on either side.
