South African War, Stele in Millers Point, Sydney, Australia
The South African War memorial is a sandstone stele on Observatory Hill in the Millers Point area of Sydney. A bronze plaque on one side lists the units from New South Wales that served in the South African War, including mounted rifles and bushmen units.
The memorial was officially opened on June 2, 1940, and was funded by the South African Soldiers' Association. It was built to honor the volunteers from New South Wales who fought in the conflict between 1899 and 1902.
The stele stands on Observatory Hill and is easy to reach on foot while walking through Millers Point or Observatory Park. A hook fitted below the bronze plaque is used to hang wreaths during remembrance ceremonies.
In front of the stele stands a Krupp cannon from the 1890s, a 75mm rifle that was added to the site later. The bronze plaque also mentions 244 horses used in the war effort, a detail that shows how much the military relied on animals at the time.
