Störtebeker in Göllwitz is a memorial stone in the village of Göllwitz on the island of Poel in northern Germany, dedicated to the legend of the pirate Klaus Störtebeker. It sits close to the shore and is accompanied by a wooden chest with a panel that tells the story behind the marker.
In the late 14th century, the Vitalienbrüder, a band of pirates active on the Baltic Sea, are said to have used Göllwitz as a base. The Hanseatic League eventually sent ships to end their raids, and many of the captured pirates were executed.
The memorial stone is right on the beach in Göllwitz and easy to reach on foot. It is part of a local legend trail, so walking along the coast is a good way to find the other stops on the route.
Local legend says Störtebeker was shipwrecked at a spot called Kuhlenlock, near the islet of Langenwerder, and fishermen still report their nets getting caught on something at that exact location. Some believe the wreck of his ship is still resting on the seabed there.
