La Era del Peladillo
La Era del Peladillo is an archaeological site in Igea, Spain, where over 1700 dinosaur footprints are preserved in rock across approximately 2100 square meters. The site reveals evidence of sauropods and other dinosaur species that roamed the region millions of years ago, with seven distinct sectors containing different types of trackways.
The site was discovered in 1988 and excavated between 1990 and 1996 to study the footprints and identify dinosaur species. A notable discovery was Hadrosaurichnoides igeaensis, a previously unknown dinosaur species with webbed feet named after the town.
The site is free to visit and offers an open space where you can explore the footprints across different sectors on the hillside. Be aware that the terrain is not adapted for people with reduced mobility and you should wear appropriate footwear for walking on uneven ground.
The smallest dinosaur footprint ever found in La Rioja measures just 9 centimeters and was left by a small carnivore. This reveals that dinosaurs of all sizes roamed the region, from tiny hunters to massive sauropods.
