Hugh's Dale Waterfall

Hugh's Dale Waterfall is a spring-fed cascade that flows year-round over layered tufa rock formations, dropping approximately 15 feet (4.6 meters) through lush subtropical rainforest within the protected national park area.

The waterfall and surrounding wetlands have long supported endemic plant and animal species found nowhere else on Earth, contributing to the island's ecological importance since the establishment of conservation protections in the region.

The waterfall serves as a spiritual site for local Chinese Buddhist communities who regularly conduct ceremonies in this natural setting, reflecting the cultural diversity and religious practices present on the island.

Visitors can access the site via the Hugh's Dale walk, an easy boardwalk trail suitable for all fitness levels, though vehicle tracks may close during red crab migration season from early morning until 10:30 am daily.

Safety restrictions currently prevent visitors from walking directly underneath the falling water due to ongoing risk of falling rocks identified in recent geotechnical assessments conducted by park authorities.
