Cascade du Cerisey, Waterfall in Cauterets, France

The Cascade du Cerisey is a waterfall in Cauterets, in the French Pyrenees, set among mossy trees and large granite rocks. The water falls over a tall rock face, and a notably balanced boulder sits at the top of the drop.

Cauterets has been known for its thermal springs for many centuries, and the surrounding waterfalls drew early travelers who came to explore the area's natural scenery. By the 19th century, walking the cascade route had become a common activity for visitors to the town.

The Cascade du Cerisey sits along a trail called the Chemin des Cascades, which links several waterfalls between Cauterets and the Pont d'Espagne. Each waterfall along the way has its own name and character, and locals have walked this path for generations.

The trail to the Cascade du Cerisey can be started from Cauterets or from La Raillère, and sturdy footwear is a good idea since parts of the path are steep and rocky. In winter, ice can make the route impassable, so a visit during warmer months is a safer choice.

At the top of the Cascade du Cerisey, a large rock sits in a position that looks almost too balanced to be natural, yet it has stayed that way for a very long time. Many visitors notice it straight away and it becomes one of the most photographed details of the waterfall.
