Toledo State Hospital Cemetery
The Toledo State Hospital Cemetery is a burial ground in Toledo, Ohio, where people rest who once lived at the nearby psychiatric hospital and had no family to claim their remains. The site consists of two sections: an older cemetery used until 1922 and a newer one established later behind the hospital buildings.
Burials began in 1888 when the psychiatric hospital opened and continued until 1973, when both cemetery sections were closed. Over the decades, wooden coffins rotted into the ground and numbered bricks marking graves became buried in soil, until volunteers started restoration work in 2005.
The burial ground carries traces of a forgotten past and is now maintained by volunteers who have uncovered many numbered grave markers. Each year, community members gather for memorial services to honor the deceased and show respect.
The grounds sit on land now mostly owned by the University of Toledo, with a small portion near a high school. Ground penetrating radar helped locate many burial sites, and maps show visitors where specific numbered markers can be found.
About 1200 grave markers were uncovered during restoration, many previously hidden under trees and brush. Researchers have matched most of the people with their names by reviewing old hospital records and death certificates, allowing families today to locate loved ones and learn about their lives.
