Toledo Zoo, Nonprofit zoo in Toledo, United States.
Toledo Zoo is a nonprofit zoo and botanical garden in Toledo, Ohio, home to more than 5,300 animals representing 750 species. The grounds are divided into themed areas such as Arctic Encounter for polar wildlife and Tembo Trail for African mammals, alongside gardens and greenhouses.
A woodchuck donated to Toledo's Parks Board in 1900 marked the start of the collection. Over the following decades, the institution grew into a regional center for species conservation and scientific research.
The facility carries a name that reflects the city's long commitment to public education about wildlife and natural habitats. Local families visit regularly to introduce children to animals from distant regions and spend time together in outdoor settings.
The grounds open daily at 10 in the morning and close at 4 in the afternoon, with entrance areas located at Anthony Wayne Trail and Broadway. Members park at no charge, while visitors without annual passes pay parking fees.
The institution pioneered the first Hippoquarium in the world, allowing visitors to watch hippos underwater through large viewing panels. This design was later adopted by other zoos and is now considered a standard approach for displaying large aquatic mammals.
