Veloroute du calavon

The Veloroute du Calavon is a long-distance cycling route stretching roughly 28 miles through the Luberon region following an abandoned railway line connecting Robion to Apt. The route runs mostly on flat gravel surfaces and passes through fertile fields, vineyards and small towns like Cavaillon, Coustellet and Cabrières-d'Avignon, with views of the Luberon hills.

The route follows a railway built in the late 19th century to transport agricultural goods and travelers through the Luberon valleys. After train service stopped in the 1930s, the track was converted into a public cycling path that now forms part of the European cycling network EuroVelo 8.

The name Calavon refers to a river flowing through the Luberon plain that gave its name to the old railway line. Today you see locals cycling to work or riding with their families on weekends along the route, while others picnic at shaded rest areas or walk their dogs on leashes.

The path is open year-round and works well for families, beginners and riders on electric bikes, as it has almost no climbs. You can expect around 3 hours of riding time for the full route, with plenty of chances to stop for food or sightseeing along the way.

Along the route you pass several old viaducts and tunnels that once carried trains over valleys and through rock. In some spots you can still see remains of platforms and buildings from former stations, now used as info points or rest areas.
