Enrico Toti Submarine

The Enrico Toti Submarine is a Cold War-era naval vessel from the Italian Navy now displayed at the Museo Nazionale della Scienza e della Tecnologia in Milan. Inside, you can see the narrow passageways, control room with dials and screens, and the cramped living quarters where the crew worked and slept.

This submarine was built in the mid-20th century and became Italy's first post-World War II underwater vessel. It sailed over 220,000 kilometers across the Mediterranean and Adriatic before being decommissioned in 2001 and brought to Milan in a complex overland transport by truck.

Access is through the museum's main ticket, and guided tours help visitors move through the tight spaces. Wear comfortable clothing and sturdy shoes, as the passageways are low and the stairs steep.

To move the submarine from the naval base in Sicily to the museum, its tower had to be removed and the vessel was transported overnight through Milan on a special convoy. Temporary steel bridges were laid along the route to protect underground pipes as the heavy vessel rolled slowly through narrow city streets.
