Chinese submarine Changcheng 353, type 035 diesel submarine
The Changcheng 353 is a submarine now serving as a museum ship in the Binhai Theme Park in Tianjin. The vessel stretches approximately 76 meters long with a dark gray hull and features torpedo tubes at both the bow and stern along with visible complex piping and hatches across its exterior.
Built in the late 1960s and launched in 1969, the submarine served the Chinese navy for more than two decades before being decommissioned in 1997. China developed this vessel by improving upon Soviet-based designs, turning it into a key step toward building its own independent submarine fleet.
The name Changcheng means Great Wall, reflecting China's pride in its defensive capabilities and technological advancement. Today visitors can see how the submarine stands in the Binhai Theme Park as a symbol of naval progress and China's journey toward military self-reliance.
The submarine is located in the Binhai Theme Park where visitors can walk around it and view the exterior structure. Wear comfortable shoes as the terrain around the vessel is uneven and exploring the grounds takes time.
The submarine was designed to carry a crew of approximately 57 sailors working in cramped quarters, and could dive to depths of around 300 meters. These extreme conditions reveal just how demanding life aboard was for those who operated it.
