Sibiu Christmas Market, christmas market in Sibiu, Romania
The Sibiu Christmas Market is a yearly event held in Piața Mare, the old town's main square, filled with wooden booths, lights, and decorations from mid-November through early January. The square hosts more than 120 exhibitors from Romania and neighboring countries, featuring a 22-meter Ferris wheel, a 600-square-meter ice rink, a carousel, and Santa's House for children.
The market was established in 2007 when Sibiu held the title of European Capital of Culture and has since become one of the country's most popular holiday events. The historic buildings surrounding Piața Mare span several centuries and provide a timeless setting for this yearly celebration.
Local artisans demonstrate traditional crafts such as ornament making and textile weaving throughout the market. These time-honored skills are woven into the festive atmosphere, showing how holiday customs remain part of everyday life here.
The market is easily walkable and the city offers nearby lodging and a charming old town district to explore around the event. The flat layout of the square makes it simple to navigate for visitors of all mobility levels.
Every evening, video projections transform the historic buildings around the square into moving artworks, animating the market with dynamic visuals. These nightly projection shows blend the old architecture with modern effects, creating a visual experience you won't find at other Christmas markets.
