Sibiu Christmas Market, christmas market in Sibiu, Romania
The Sibiu Christmas Market is a yearly event held in Piața Mare, the old town's main square, filling it with wooden booths, lights, and decorations from mid-November through early January. The square hosts over 120 exhibitors from Romania and neighboring countries, featuring a 22-meter Ferris wheel, a 600-square-meter ice rink, a carousel, and Santa's House for children.
The market was established in 2007 when Sibiu held the title of European Capital of Culture and has since become one of the country's most popular holiday events. The historic surroundings of Piața Mare, with buildings spanning several centuries, form the timeless backdrop for this yearly celebration.
The market keeps local traditions alive through artisans who demonstrate traditional crafts like ornament making and textile weaving. This blend of time-honored skills and festive celebration creates a gathering place where visitors and locals share the same joyful holiday experience together.
The market opens daily on weekdays from 11 am to 10 pm and weekends from 10 am to 10 pm, with adjusted hours on holidays like Christmas Eve and New Year's Day. The square is easily walkable and the city offers nearby lodging and a charming old town district to explore before or after your visit.
Every evening, impressive video projections transform the historic buildings around the square into moving works of art, animating the market with dynamic visuals. These nightly projection shows blend the old architecture with modern effects, creating a unique visual experience you won't find at other Christmas markets.

Every year, when the advent arrives, Christmas markets change the squares and old streets of European towns. Wooden stalls are set up and offer local flavors, crafts, and seasonal decorations. Walking from one stand to another, you can taste hot mulled wine, roasted almonds, and see the handmade goods that each region is proud of. In Germany, markets are found in Nuremberg, Dresden, Munich, Hamburg, and Stuttgart. Austria has markets in Vienna and Salzburg. France gathers its markets in Strasbourg, Metz, Montbéliard, and Lille. Brussels, Bruges, and Louvain welcome visitors in Belgium, Maastricht and Valkenburg in the Netherlands, and Wrocław, Krakow, and Poznań in Poland. These places tell stories about their local history and food traditions. From Prague to Budapest, passing through Zagreb, Basel, and Bern, markets are also found in Central and Eastern Europe. Scandinavian cities like Stockholm, Gothenburg, Oslo, and Rovaniemi, along with Riga and Tallinn in the Baltic states, keep this tradition alive. London, Edinburgh, Merano, Asti-Govone, and Madeira finish this winter trip across the continent, each showing how Christmas is celebrated in their ways.
