ASTRA National Museum Complex, National open-air museum in Dumbrava Forest, Sibiu, Romania
ASTRA National Museum Complex is an open-air museum set across a forest area south of Sibiu, with over 300 historical buildings collected from different regions. The structures are linked by walking paths that wind through the woodland setting.
The complex was founded in 1905 by the ASTRA cultural organization as a project to safeguard Romanian heritage. Major expansions and updates began after 1990 to preserve and display more historical structures and collections.
The complex shows how people lived and worked in different parts of Romania through the ages. Walking through the traditional homes and workshops gives you a sense of everyday life, crafts, and local customs from centuries past.
The site is spread across a large area and requires comfortable footwear for extensive walking. There are dining options in historical buildings on the grounds, and visiting works best during good weather.
Within the grounds sits a collection built by explorer Franz Binder, featuring Egyptian and Asian artifacts gathered during 19th-century expeditions. This unusual addition reveals how local travelers and scholars brought distant discoveries back home.
