Sibiu Lutheran Cathedral, Lutheran cathedral in Sibiu, Romania.
Sibiu Lutheran Cathedral is a Gothic structure with a 73-meter tower crowned by four corner turrets and stone vaults stretching across three naves and a transept. The interior displays an elaborate spatial arrangement characteristic of major cathedral buildings from this period.
The building arose in the 14th century on the site of a 12th-century Romanesque church. During the Reformation in the 16th century, it transitioned from Catholic to Lutheran worship.
The cathedral houses funeral stones of former mayors and officials embedded in its walls, honoring the memory of Transylvanian Saxons who lived here. These memorial plaques tell the story of people who shaped the city over centuries.
Visitors can climb 192 steps to reach an observation point at 55 meters high in the main tower's turrets. This ascent requires physical effort but rewards you with far-reaching views across the city.
Inside stands the largest organ in Transylvania, featuring 78 registers installed between 1914 and 1915 by the Sauer company. This instrument represents a masterwork of organ craftsmanship and a rare example of the sonic standards of that era.
