Bridge of Lies, Cast iron bridge in Sibiu, Romania
The Bridge of Lies is a cast iron structure in Sibiu connecting two main squares across a short span with four curved metal arches. The arches display Gothic decorations and were built without supporting pillars underneath.
It was built in 1859 by the Friedrich Hütte foundry as the first cast iron bridge of its kind in Romania. This represented an engineering advance for the region at that time.
The name comes from old merchant tales where traders were confronted here when caught in dishonest dealings. Local residents still recall these stories that shaped the area's reputation.
The bridge is easy to reach on foot and serves as the main pedestrian crossing between the two squares. Visitors can find good viewing angles from multiple spots and examine the metal details up close.
The railing features eight circular panels displaying the coat of arms of Sibiu on the south side and construction details on the north side. These panels tell stories about the bridge's origins and how it was made.
