Synagogue of Sibiu

The Synagogue of Sibiu is a red brick structure divided into five bays separated by bright yellow columns, with semicircular windows decorated with Stars of David. The facade displays Hebrew inscriptions and features a stone frieze with plant motifs separating the ground floor from the upper level.

Hungarian architect Ferenc Szalay designed this eclectic structure between 1898 and 1899, with funding provided by Josef Schwartz. The project marked a period of growth for Sibiu's Jewish community during the late 1800s.

The interior follows a basilica layout with three naves and separate galleries for women during worship. This design reflects the religious practices of Judaism in that era.

The building sits at Constitution Street number 19 and can be reached via a platform with four steps leading to three separate entrances. The main entrance is at the front, making it easy to find your way in.

The Hebrew inscriptions visible on the facade connect the building directly to Jewish tradition and identity. These details reveal how significant this place has been for the community throughout its existence.
