Christmas Market Obernai
The Christmas Market Obernai is a seasonal event held daily from late November through December on multiple squares throughout the old town. Nearly forty wooden chalets display handcrafted goods, local foods like gingerbread and foie gras, and warm drinks such as mulled wine and hot chocolate.
Obernai was founded in the Middle Ages, and its belfry at Place du Beffroi has stood as a landmark for centuries. The Christmas Market is a modern tradition that preserves regional holiday customs of Alsace and celebrates the area's craft and culinary heritage.
The name Obernai comes from Alsatian roots meaning "upper meadow," reflecting the town's location. During the holiday season, the market becomes a gathering place where locals and visitors share food, crafts, and traditions together, with caroling and performances adding to the community spirit throughout the celebration.
The market is open daily except Christmas Day from morning until early evening, with extended hours on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. Visiting on weekdays is more relaxed, allowing you to explore stalls and chat with craftspeople at a slower pace, while weekends draw larger crowds.
The market is known for its special white wine mulled wine made by local winegrowers according to a distinctive recipe that stays memorable long after the season. A popular local activity is the "Bredele Tour," where visitors walk through Obernai singing carols and stop at bakeries to sample traditional Christmas cookies.
