Ehem. Gelände Zeche Ewald Fortsetzung Schachtanlage 1/2/3
The ehem. Gelände Zeche Ewald Fortsetzung Schachtanlage 1/2/3 is a former coal mining site in Oer-Erkenschwick with preserved shafts and buildings from coal extraction operations. The area includes administrative buildings, machine halls, and visible headframes of the shafts that document the infrastructure of mining.
Mining began in 1899 as a continuation of an adjacent pit to increase coal production. After difficult times during the economic crisis of the 1930s and World War II, the mine reached its peak output after 1945 and employed thousands of workers before closing in the late 1980s.
The site carries the memory of mining culture that shaped many families in the region. Visitors can still see how workers were organized, with residential homes, workshops, and administrative buildings showing the structure of life around the mine.
The site is quiet today and can be explored on foot or by bicycle, with parts developed as a park. Note that access to underground areas is restricted for safety reasons, but the exterior structures and buildings can be visited.
Parts of the old railway for coal transport have been converted into a walking and cycling path that guides visitors through the area's history. This transformation blends the industrial past with modern recreational use and shows how former mining landscapes are being renewed.
