Korzeniowy Dół
Korzeniowy Dól is a narrow canyon in Kazimierz Dolny stretching about 400 meters in length. Its walls are made of soft loess soil rising up to 8 meters high, with oak, linden, and hornbeam trees lining the edges.
The canyon formed through water erosion as rain and streams carved through soft loess soil over many centuries. The route likely served as a path about 400 years ago, as records from the 17th century estate Zadąbrowszczyzna suggest.
Korzeniowy Dól gets its name from the tree roots that grow from the canyon walls, creating unusual shapes and natural forms. Artists and photographers visit regularly because these hanging roots look like sculptures carved from the earth itself.
Entry to the canyon costs about 3 Polish zloty per person and features a well-marked path for easy walking. The walk from central Kazimierz Dolny takes roughly 30 minutes, or visitors can take a local minibus from the town square.
The loess material forming the walls was blown by wind during the last ice age and displays today colorful layered bands with yellowish tones. This geological formation makes the canyon an important study site for geomorphologists and is regularly featured at international scientific conferences.
