Lakes Distillery
Lakes Distillery is a spirits production facility housed in renovated farm buildings near Bassenthwaite Lake in the Lake District. It produces whisky, gin, and vodka in small batches using water from the surrounding area and ages spirits in different types of barrels.
The distillery opened in 2014 as England's largest whisky producer and converted historic farm buildings through careful renovation. The project respected historical structures and used traditional building techniques while transforming the site into a modern production facility.
The distillery is located in a region with a long tradition of spirit-making. Today, it combines that heritage with a contemporary craft approach, using local ingredients and water from the area as central to its identity.
Visitors can walk through the still room and warehouse during the day to observe the production process firsthand. The site includes a bistro with indoor and outdoor seating, a shop, and a visitor center, all easily accessible to guests.
The water used in spirit production comes from Sprinkling Tarn and flows through Keswick and Bassenthwaite Lake before reaching the Irish Sea. This geographic connection makes each bottle a product of the local water landscape.
