Loggia dei mercanti
The Loggia dei Mercanti is an open-air hall in Macerata featuring a series of arches supported by travertine columns that create a covered walkway. The structure spans two levels with large rounded arches, providing protection from the elements while maintaining openness and light.
The Loggia was built in the early 1500s, with construction beginning in 1503 and finishing in 1505, under the involvement of local architect Cassiano da Fabriano. The structure received a major restoration in 1905 when experts repaired the roof and carefully restored original features that had been altered or damaged.
The Loggia dei Mercanti served as a gathering place where merchants and residents mixed commerce with community life and social interaction. The space shows how trade and daily relations were inseparable in the city's heart.
The Loggia is located centrally on Piazza della Libertà, Macerata's main square, and is easy to reach and spot on foot. The open arcades provide natural shelter from sun and rain, making the space comfortable to visit in any season.
The building originally housed a communal stadera, an ancient beam scale, for weighing grain and goods, highlighting its role as a trade control point. Later it became home to a popular cafe that served as a meeting spot for business dealings and negotiations.
