Centro Storico
Centro Storico is the old core of Bassano del Grappa, featuring narrow cobbled streets and buildings from different periods. The structures have simple facades with tall windows and covered arcades, while small squares open up between the buildings, and the Brenta River flows nearby at the edge of the district.
The area has been settled since around the 11th century BC, with Romans arriving in the 2nd century BC. During the Middle Ages, the city grew around a church and a fortress, and from the early 1400s it fell under Venetian control.
The old center takes its character from the Brenta River that flows alongside it. Residents gather in the small squares, and local crafts like ceramics and woodwork remain visible in family workshops throughout the streets.
The area is compact and easily explored on foot, though comfortable walking shoes are needed for the cobbled streets and narrow alleys. Information plaques are posted throughout to help visitors identify historic buildings and sites.
The Ponte degli Alpini is a famous wooden arch bridge spanning the Brenta River, built in 1209 and rebuilt many times after destruction. Locals speak of a distinctive sound the bridge makes as people cross it, which some call the bridge's song.
