Barbie: The Dream Experience
Barbie: The Dream Experience is an exhibition in Amsterdam spanning about 2,000 square meters that guides visitors through 12 interactive zones featuring life-sized replicas of Barbie toys and scenes from different decades. The space is designed for hands-on exploration, allowing guests of all ages to walk through themed areas that recreate iconic moments from Barbie's history.
The exhibition traces Barbie's evolution from her creation to the present day, with each zone representing a different time period and showing how the doll and her world have changed across decades. This presentation of evolution demonstrates not only shifts in toy design but also the cultural and societal changes that have shaped the Barbie line over time.
The exhibition was created by Mattel, Barbie's manufacturer, in collaboration with WONDR to celebrate how Barbie has taken on different roles and styles throughout the decades. Each zone reflects changing fashions, careers, and lifestyles, showing how the doll has mirrored different periods and cultural moments in history.
The venue is open daily from early morning until evening, with extended hours during school holidays, and visits typically last about 90 minutes. It is easily accessible, just a few minutes from Noorderpark metro station, with nearby parking available. Note that some areas like the Barbie rocket and the DreamHouse second floor are not fully wheelchair accessible, though most passages are wide enough for mobility devices.
The experience offers special adult-only sessions after 5 pm where visitors can explore the exhibition without children and enjoy a complimentary drink in a relaxed setting. This creates an entirely different atmosphere for older fans seeking a more mature perspective on Barbie's journey.
