Bodegas Marqués de Riscal

Bodegas Marqués de Riscal

Bodegas Marqués de Riscal is a winery in the small village of Elciego that has produced wine since the mid-1800s and spans several hundred hectares of vineyards. The estate blends historic stone buildings and deep cellars with modern structures, including a striking titanium-clad building by architect Frank Gehry featuring pink, gold, and silver accents.

The winery was founded in 1858 when Guillermo Hurtado de Amézaga, the Marquis of Riscal, brought French winemaking techniques and grape varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon to the region. The historic cellar built in 1860 and the original bodega from 1883 show how wine production has been maintained through generations in this location.

The name comes from Guillermo Hurtado de Amézaga, the Marquis of Riscal, who shaped wine production here in the 1800s. Today you can see this heritage in how workers tend the vineyards and care for the wine in the cellars, showing how deeply winemaking is woven into local life.

Visits typically start at Plaza del Reloj, the central square, where you can see both the oldest sections and the modern buildings. The site offers cellar tours, wine tastings, a hotel, restaurants, and a spa, so plan for several hours or consider staying overnight to experience the full range of activities.

The estate keeps a private bottle from 1929 as a prized treasure, symbolizing the long tradition of the house and its confidence in wine quality across more than a century. At the same time, the facility produces over 6 million bottles per year, with more than 60 percent exported to over 100 countries worldwide.
